O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?
How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah (Psalm
According to Wikipedia the definition of pop psychology is, “The term
popular psychology (frequently called pop psychology or pop psych) refers to concepts and theories about human mental life and behavior that are purportedly based on psychology and that attain popularity among the general population.”
This from Wisegeek,” Pop psychology includes a wide and ever-changing set of theoretical practices popularized by general public acceptance.”
Although the world has psychologists, the Christian has the Wonderful Counselor, our Creator, the One who knows our hearts and thoughts. We have His book at our fingertips, but how many Christians rely on theories and current trends to get through their problems?
David was a man who was chased for years by King Saul who wanted him dead. I would think that would be mighty stressful. How did he survive without running to a therapist? He turned first to the Lord and His word.
Be gracious to me, O God, for man tramples on me;
all day long an attacker oppresses me;
my enemies trample on me all day long,
for many attack me proudly.
When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?
(Psalm 56:1-4 ESV)
I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the LORD;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
I sought the LORD, and he answered me
and delivered me from all my fears.
(Psalm 34:1-4 ESV)
The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the LORD is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the LORD is clean,
the rules of the LORD are true,
and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
(Psalm 19:7-11 ESV)
Seeking counsel is biblical, but it must be godly counseling.
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
(Psalm 1:1 ESV)
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.
(1 Corinthians 3:19 NIV)
Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.
Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.
(Proverbs 19:20-21 ESV)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
fools despise wisdom and instruction.
(Proverbs 1:7 ESV)
Here are two excellent quotes by Don Matzat. You can find them here at this very informative website.
If we ever doubt any of the promises of God and experience fear, guilt, or worry, we should turn back to the Bible and again read and meditate upon the promises of God. [Don Matzat, Truly Transformed, (Eugene, Oregon: harvest house publishers, 1992, p. 165]
For this reason we preach the same message of Christ crucified, risen, ascended, and coming again Sunday after Sunday after Sunday. We always need to be reminded to turn our eyes upon Jesus – the Jesus of the New Testament who died for us and rose again.”[Don Matzat, Truly Transformed, (Eugene, Oregon: harvest house publishers, 1992, p. 165]
We need to focus on Jesus and not on ourselves and our problems. This is why it is a good thing to preach the gospel to yourself everyday, “Christ DIED for MY sins, He rose from the dead and defeated sin and death.” It puts things back in perspective.
“Churches have looked to psychology to fill the gap, but it isn’t going to work. Professional psychologists are no substitute for spiritually gifted people, and the counsel that psychology offers cannot replace biblical wisdom and divine power. Moreover, psychology tends to make people dependent on a therapist, whereas those exercising true spiritual gifts always turn people back to all-sufficient Savior and His all-sufficient Word.” – John MacArthur
If you are thinking of joining GCM because it is a site dedicated to attached parenting from a “Christian” perspective, please be aware it is NOT. In the GCM forums there is more talk based on psychology than there is talk based on the Bible. In time I will be exposing this in greater detail.
The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception. (Proverbs 14:8 NIV)
